3. What is the uterus and where is it located?The uterus is a pear‑shaped, hollow muscle inside the pelvic cavity. It sits behind the bladder and in front of the rectum. It has a top part called the fundus, a middle body, and a lower cervix that opens into the vagina.
4. How does the uterus grow to hold a baby?The uterus can expand about 500 times its normal size. It does this by making its muscle cells grow bigger and more, and by adding more connective tissue. The wall also gets thinner so it can stretch around a baby that can be over 50 cm long.
